Scope & Content |
Item is a bracelet originally designed by Bill Reid and adapted and cast by Toni Cavelti. The bracelet features five Bill Reid bear masks. They are linked with five abstract panels composed of parallel irregular wavy strands of 18k gold. The three central strands of these panels are inset with fitted platinum on which are mounted variously sized diamons. The five panels appear to be fully repetitve, but close examination reveals that each is made of comparable but unqiue elements soldered together with a support panel at the back. A hinged closing mechanism is located behind the ears of the right hand mask. Engraved on the back of the central linking panel: The Cavelti – Reid Bracelet In ca. 1980, Bill Reid created a drawing of a bracelet as a proposal for a collaboration between himself and Toni Cavelti (2006.1.5.2). Unfortunately, Reid's health went into a decline before the project could be realized. After his passing, Cavelti took five bear masks of Reid's design that he had cast in ca. 1985. He crafted the five adjoining panels to create The Cavelti–Reid Bracelet. |
