Item is a book of photographs by Adelaide de Menil with accompanying text by Bill Reid. The subjects feature mainly old Northwest Coast village ruins and scenes from nature. Between 1966 and 1968, Adelaide de Menil explored the Northwest Coast from Vancouver Island to Southeast Alaska, visiting ancient villages and photographing the decaying totem poles she came across. De Menil, who was a friend of Bill Reid's, collaborated with him to produce this book in the hopes of preserving the Northwest Coast cultures they feared were fading. In 2010, de Menil donated her photographs to the Bill Reid Centre. The following year, guest curator Peter Morin and the Bill Reid Gallery hosted an exhibit of de Menil's pictures. It was called "Revisiting the Silence" in honour of the book published 40 years prior. Some of these prints can still be viewed at the Bill Reid Gallery today.
