Photograph depicts Bill Reid carving a totem pole. The totem pole is in its early stages, with the design sketched on to guide the carver. Reid is working outside surrounded by various pieces of discarded wood. It is likely that the photograph was taken in summer due to Reid's T-shirt. On the verso, bottom left corner: 3/4 Haida house project, UBC carving shed,1961 (Bill Reib [sic] & Doug Cranmer) On the verso, bottom right corner: Takao Tanabe 1961-2009 The totem pole was one of seven commissioned by the University of British Columbia for display in Totem Park. The totem pole was later relocated to the Museum of Anthropology. |
