Scope & Content |
Item is a boxwood sculpture of a killer whale. The whale is shown leaping out of the waves carved into the base below. Reid later used this small boxwood sculpture as the inspiration for his 5.5 m tall sculputre "Chief of the Undersea World", which is currently located at the Vancouver Aquarium. Reid wanted the waves at the base of the sculpture to be a "real" sea. On one of his many cruises in the waters surrounding Haida Gwaii, Reid was observed showing a photo of this carving to the ship's captain and demanding, after a night of wild storm, "There, does that look like Hecate Strait?"
