Scope & Content |
Item is a painting of Bill Reid. Reid is shown on the left side of the portrait. He is seated and leaning over the totem pole he is in the process of carving. A light can be seen in the distance. Written on lower right: C Hopkins This portrait was commission in 2005, 7 years after Bill Reid's passing. The artist, Chris Hopkins, worked from a photograph of Reid taken by Reid's wife, Martine. In the original photograph, Reid is carving at the Skidegate carving shed, crafting the totem pole that the town raised in 1978. Due to the fact that the pole is near completion, it is likely that this picture was taken in 1977 or 1978. Thus Reid is likely 57-58 years old in this portrait. |
