Item is a bronze wall mounted sculpture. It depicts four scenes from Haida mythology (from left to right): The Bear Prince, his human wife, and their twin cubs Nanasimgit, his wife, and her Killer Whale abductor The Sea Wolf who kills and eats three killer whales a day The Dogfish Woman and her mythic dogfish "This work was inspired by a device often used by Haida artists, an exchange of tongues, whereby power was communicated from one mythic creature to another. At a deeper level, the power of these old forms, born of a mythological past, reinterpreted through new materials and techniques, in a contemporary setting, can still speak to us across time, space, and enormous cultural differences." Bill Reid The sculpture was cast in 2 parts and later joined together. It was cast at the Harman Sculpture Foundry. Mythic Messengers was commissioned by Teleglobe Canada to decorate their Burnaby office. It was donated by Teleglobe's parent company The BCE Group in 2001. |
