Item is a banner depicting the Wolf. The banner is done in red and black ink. The Wolf was Bill Reid's crest. This banner is an edition of a banner that was designed to accompany the sculpture "The Spirit of Haida Gwaii". The following quote describes this figure in "The Spirit of Haida Gwaii". Bill Reid's description of the Wolf: The Wolf of the Haidas was a completely imaginary creature, perhaps existing over there on the mainland but never seen on Haida Gwaii. Nevertheless he was an important figure in the crest hierarchy. Troublesome, volatile, ferociously playful, he can usually be found with his sharp fangs embedded in someone's anatomy. Here he is vigorously chewing on the Eagle's wing. |
