Collection consists of a minature tea set crafted by Bill Reid as a gift for his sister Margaret. This collection is reflective of Bill Reid's early artistic skill. Reid crafted this tea set at the age of 12. Looking back in 1982, Reid wrote: "Somewhere along the line, I developed a unique art: blackboard chalk carving. I started it in school because I was very bored. Round chalk was such a fine medium that I made little tea sets, cup and saucers, and finished them with nail polis... It showed me I could do fine work. The first totem pole I ever made was out of blackboard chalk." This particular tea set was donated to the Bill Reid Foundation by Dr. Margaret "Peggy" Kennedy, Reid's sister. |
